Punch Inspiration 8/25/11

Sorry I haven't been on the ball with my inspiration posts lately.  Nursing this cold has made me so tired and I find that I'm plum tuckered out after my daughter goes to bed that I just can't get it done!

Sorry I didn't have an inspiration post yesterday.  The weekend was so beautiful that I spent a good portion of it outside.  After going for more than year without a cold or allergy flare-up, I also got sick this weekend.  I imagine my body was a little run down from the surgery.  I've forgotten how aggrivating the congestion and runny nose can be! lol

Peachy Keen LFIF Challenge #22 Furry Friends

This week's challenge was totally up my alley!  I just love making animals and I thought I would combine this with halloween which is another of my favorite holidays.  Please make sure to jump over to the challenge site and check out the other awesome entries this week right HERE.  Have a PKS face set?  Play along for a chance to win the Large Critter Faces stamp set (details at the challenge site).

You know I love action cards and I instantly thought of doing a double slider for this idea.  You may recall the halloween double slider cards I did last year HERE and HERE.  This time, I used the Peachy Keen Cottage Cutz Kitty die set to create my little kitty.  Then, I created a punch art cauldron complete with glittery bubbles to have him pop out of!  Please see instructions below the pictures.

Pull the bat at the top of the card up and the kitty pops out of the cauldron!

Instructions:
Die cut, stamp face and assemble kitty using the Peachy Keen CottageCutz Tear Kitty set.  Color whites of eyes with uniball white gel pen.

To create the cauldron, punch the following pieces with Stampin' Up! punches:
2-1/2" Circle in Basic Black for cauldron
(3) Word Windows in Basic Black for rim and feet of cauldron
several 1/2" and 3/8" Circles in Glittery Green paper for bubbles (3/8" circle is from Itty Bitty Shapes punch set) - I recommend Die Cuts With A View glitter stack

Cut about 1/4" of the top off 2-1/2" circle.  Cut one word window in half for legs.  Glue legs onto bottom.  Overlap other 2 word window pieces to create rim.  Attach to top of cauldron with dimensionals.  Glue circles onto back of rim and stack circles to create bubble effect.

For the basic Double Slider tutorial, please got to Splitcoast Stampers HERE.

If you want to make your card just like mine, cut the following pieces:
4-1/4" x 11" Pear Pizzazz card stock folded in half for card base
4" x 5-1/4" Glittery Black card stock (card front)
3-7/8" x 3" pumpkin colored stripe paper (card front)
3-7/8" x 2-3/8" halloween print paper (card front) (My Minds Eye)
3-7/8" x 1" bronze glitter paper (punched with Fiskars ghost border)
3-1/4" x 5" Glittery Black card stock (top slider piece)
3-1/8" x 4-7/8" green halloween print (top slider piece) (My Minds Eye)
(4) 1/2" Circles in any color

The assembly of this card is a little different than the instructions at SCS.  I recommend making these modifications to get the card just right.
  • Assemble the card front first.  Layer pumpkin stripe onto glitter black then layer halloween print onto bottom of glitter black, slightly overlapping pumpkin stripe.  Glue ghost border along top of halloween print.
  • On the card front, take the word window punch and slide it in on the left side as far as it will go with the bottom edge of the punch about 3/4" from the bottom of card.  Punch another slot on the right side of the card in the same manner.
  • Layer card front onto base of card.  Use a craft knife to cut out the word window slots in the pear pizzazz card stock as shown.
  • Layer the green print onto black glittery card stock for greeting slider.  Punch out black glittery bat and attach to top.  Stamp greetings in black (Rubbernecker stamps)

  • Due to the extensive layers, I recommend stacking 2 dimensionals onto the two 1/2" circles for the sliding mechanism.  Follow steps 7 through 10 HERE for mechanism assembly.
  • Attach the feet of kitty onto the 1/2" circles as shown.
  • Add dimensionals onto outside edges of cauldron (thinner pieces).  Attach cauldron over kitty to cover him up.  Make sure that when he slides up and down that his body doesn't get stuck by the dimensionals holding on the cauldron.
I hope you enjoyed this card!  This is one of my all time faves!

Get outside!

If you live in the twin cities area or northwest Wisconsin, you HAVE to get outside today!  This most definitely is the most perfect day of the summer.  80 degrees, sunny, a light breeze and most spectacular beautiful blue cloudless sky I have ever seen!  I don't know if I've just never paid attention but the color of the sky is just so breathtaking.  I wish I had cardstock in this color!

Of course, I have to work today so I only got to enjoy my lunch hour in this gorgeous weather but if I had the day off, it would just lay out on the grass at the park and read a good book.  If you aren't working today and are able to, please get out there and enjoy this weather! Anybody who lives in this area knows that days like this are few and far between (especially this summer!).

Punch Inspiration 8/15/11

Good morning everyone.  Today is my first day back to work after having my gallbladder removed.  I feel a little better every day.  I'm completely off my pain medication so that's a good sign but I wish I could spend another day or 2 home catching up on all of the work I didn't do this past week!

If you missed it, the newest issue of Papers & Pixels went live last night.  I have a punch art peony project in this issue.  You can download the free tutorial HERE.  Please leave a comment and let me know what you think of the project!

Update and Thank You

Thank you to everyone that emailed or commented on my Tuesday post.  The surgery went well and I am feeling much better today.  I have some pain in the largest incision site because my Gallbladder was pulled through my abdominal muscle.  If feels like I did 1000 situps yesterday.  I was worried about having upper shoulder and neck pain as they had warned I might have but so far it has been ok with just mild tension around my neck.

I'm taking the rest of the week off to recover and hopefully will get some projects completed as well.

Punch Inspiration 8/9/11

Before I get to the inspiration today, I just wanted to let everyone know that I'm going in for surgery today to have my gallbladder removed.  Although it's a pretty routine surgery, I anticipate that I won't be spending much time crafting or checking my emails while I recover.  I anticipate getting back into the swing of it in a week.  If you try to contact me, please excuse me for not getting back to you right away.  Thanks!

Peachy Keen LFIF Challenge #21 Shape Cards

This challenge was a lot of fun!  Not only did I get to spend some quality crafting time with the Peachy Queen, Kathy J, but I finally used an Action Wobble Spring (thanks Ruthie!) with my little punch art elephant.  These things are so fun!  I also got to use a face set that I never used before.  It's called PK-740 Baby Animal Faces in 3" size.  It worked perfectly for my little baby elephant!

The challenge was to create a shape card.  The ladies really created some awesome cards!  Check them out at the challenge site HERE. Play along on the challenge for a chance to win a fabulous prize!

The step by step instructions and a brief video of the action wobble spring in action is below.

Instructions:
*this project uses all Stampin' Up! paper punches

Punch the following pieces for the elephant:
(3) Ornaments in Baja Breeze - EARS & FEET
(1) Extra Large Oval in Baja Breeze - HEAD
(1) 2-1/2" Circle in Baja Breeze - BODY
(1) Blossom Petals (large petal) in Baja Breeze - TRUNK

Stamp the elephant face from PK-740 Baby Animal Faces in 3" size with black ink pad.  Color in whites of eyes with uni-ball signo gel pen.  Stipple or sponge rose ink onto cheeks.  Color in mouth with black zig pen.

Trim the Blossoms Petal punch as shown to create the trunk piece.  Cut one ornament in half (vertically) and round out ends to create feet.  Sponge edges of all pieces with Baja Breeze ink. Color toes with Basic Gray marker and outline with black zig pen.  Draw details onto trunk.  Glue ears onto back of head.  Attach trunk with dimensional.  Set pieces aside.

Card Assembly:
For basic instructions on how to create an easel shape card using a Sizzix or Spellbinders die, please check out this project HERE

I used the following supplies for my card:
Action Wobble Spring
Spellbinders Grand Calibur Nestabilities die
Tim Hotlz Bricked embossing folder
Sizzix Striped embossing folder
Early Espresso, Crumb Cake, Baja Breeze and Cherry Cobbler card stock
Striped designer paper
Scallop Circle, Decorative Label, Heart to Heart and Modern Label punches
Early Espresso ink
White satin ribbon
A Word For You greeting stamp set

After assembling card front, attach elephant body, then embossed brick layer.  Attach feet with dimensionals and head with Action Wobble Spring.  Below is a video of what the Action Wobble Spring does.  They are back in stock at Peachy Keen!  Order them HERE.
